TAFSIR OF QURANIC VERSES AND ANALYSIS: 1 : لَا تُجَادِلُوا

Do not argue/ debate

TAFSIR IBN KATHIR:

This verse is a reminder from Allah not to argue with the people of the Book, except with a good manner. Which means, whoever wants to engage in a conversation to find out about the religion of the people of the book, they have no choice but to use a better manner to have a dialogue with them, instead of just arguing in a negative manner.
Also in the Quran, in Surah An- Nahl, verse 125, Allah mentioned; “Invite to the way your Lord with wisdom and fair preaching”. The lesson from this verse is that we are encouraged to have a well-mannered dialogue or conversation with the non- Muslims, especially if they never meant any harm towards us. Therefore, we should treat them with respect, by avoiding any argument that can lead to any conflict. This is in the case where the non- Muslims are not seen as a threat to us. However, if they meant any harm, it is acceptable for the Muslims to wage a war against them in order to defend ourselves.

TAFSIR ATH-THABARI:

According to at-Thabari, there is clash of opinions between the scholars in defining the verse وَلَا تُجَادِلُوا أَهْلَ الْكِتَاب َ as this brings discussion into two matters. The first view said that what is mean by the verse is the resident of Makkah. So, it is permissible to have debate with the Ahl al-Kitab at Makkah using good ways which means praying for them and hearing upon the opinions and speeches given by them but still, all the things that they delivered should be properly analyse and Muslims must stay firm to their faith. It is later explains that the one whom Muslims should be dabate with is Ahl al-Kitab who are injustice as they are already given the reminder but refused to accept it. The second view said that no one should having debate and discussion with ahl al-Kitab except with the most beautiful manner. This verse is talking about how we should behave nicely to the non-Muslims in any situation and always shows to them our good manners so that we can respect each other.

TAFSIR FI ZILAL AL-QURAN

The verse portrays about the commandments for Muslims to argue in the best way with the People of the Scripture. In Tafsir Fi Zilal Al-Quran, Syed Qutb has explained the importance of having good manner towards them because the message given by God to all prophets was and will be forever the same. It was planned by God to let those who have gone astray coming back to the right path following the prophet’s messages and to re-educate them to the way of life which God has laid down.
Syed Qutb also has illustrated the division of mankind which is divided into two groups that are the believers who are God’s party and the rejecters, who are Satan’s party. This division transcends time and place. Every generation of believers is merely one ring in a long chain stretching over many centuries. Thus, the strongest tie that was being mentioned by Syed Qutb is actually the faith.
Thus, Muslims are instructed not to argue with the people of earlier revelations except in accordance with what is best: which means explaining the purpose behind the new message and outlining the links between it and all earlier divine messages.
In a nutshell, the verse actually stresses on the importance of accepting the final form of the divine message which is in full agreement with all previous messages, and also complementing them in accordance with God’s knowledge of what suits people and their needs. There is, however, one exception to be singled out which being portrayed in the verse “those of them who are intent on wrongdoing.”

I did this three terms analysis with my close friends, Aishah Azlan and Masitah Shaiful Anuar. They both referred to the tafasir of Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari respectively while me myself used Fi Zilalil Quran from Syed Qutb.

TAFSIR OF QURANIC VERSES AND ANALYSIS: 2: لَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ

Do not let hatred / no offense

TAFSIR IBN KATHIR:

In this verse, Allah reminded his servant to always give fair judgement and be just. And not to let enmity or hatred towards a group of people to be the boundary that limits the fair treatment that those people deserve. Allah proceeded the verse by emphasizing the importance of being just, and mentioned that the act of justice towards others is nearer to Taqwa. Allah reminded his servants to have Taqwa, as Allah is Well Acquainted with what we do.
Therefore, the lesson from this verse is that, no matter who we are dealing with, either with Muslims or non- Muslims, we should be fair and give the same treatment to all. Just because a person does not have the same faith as we do, that does not mean that we should degrade him or insult him. Rather, we must have a good relationship with him regardless of our differences of opinion. Allah commands us to do so in order to show good manners as Muslims, and to establish a stronger bond between Muslims and non- Muslims.

TAFSIR ATH-THABARI:

Based on the opinion of Abu Ja’far, he interprets the verse " يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُونُوا قَوَّامِينَ لِلَّـهِ شُهَدَاءَ بِالْقِسْطِ ۖوَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ شَنَآنُ قَوْمٍ عَلَىٰ أَلَّا تَعْدِلُوا ۚ (O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allah and be just witnesses and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice) with the meaning that to set the righteousness and truth for the cause of Allah and to be a justice witness to everyone whether they are our friends or enemy. This part of the verse stresses the importance of practicing justice to everyone that we encounter with especially on the matter of being a witness for them. The words وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُمْ which mean “do not make your hatred” shows how human should not get themselves influenced with their bad feeling in acting towards others. This verse is said to be revealed to the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him during the time when the Jews (Jews of Khaibar) wanted to kill him.

TAFSIR FI ZILAL AL-QURAN

According to Syed Qutb, Muslims should be justice towards the people of other religion and deal with them without affected to love or hatred.
It is justice based on the duty of remaining steadfast in devotion to God alone. No influences are ever allowed to tilt the balance of justice, especially when believers are mindful that God watches over them and knows what lies at the bottom of their hearts.
Allah also reminds the believers too not allowing hatred towards those who was preventing them to enter Mecca influence their action to be injustice and aggression against those people. Verily, this is indeed a self-restrain and a high tolerance and by this they were elevated by the Divine system.
Syed Qutb also mentioned the two stages in dealing with the unbelievers, the first stage requiring them not to launch aggression. The second stage is to maintain the justice despite of hatred and hostility feelings they felt. The first stage illustrates the passive attitude that require them to self-restrain while the second stage guide them to have a proactive attitude ensuring justice to people who are hostile to the believers and detested by them.
Thus, the term La Yajrimannakum brings meaning “Never allow your hatred” which meant to the prohibition of being injustice influenced by hatred and hostile.
No human being can attain this standard unless he deals in such a matter directly with God. This is the result that comes about when people are steadfast in their devotion to God, addressing their feelings purely to Him, fearing none but Him, and realizing that He knows their innermost thoughts. No earthly consideration can lift human beings to such a high standard and keep them there. It is a standard achievable only through absolute dedication to God.

TAFSIR IBN KATHIR:

This verse mentioned the story of Prophet Shu’aib and his people. His people were non- believers and were against Prophet Shu’aib. Prophet Shu’aib warned his people that just because of their enmity and hatred towards Prophet Shu’aib, they should not let themselves to continue their ignorance and disbelief which leads them towards being misguided. Or else, their fate shall be repeated as what have overcame the people of Nuh, Hud Salih, and Lut.
A two-way relationship is important where both parties, Muslims and non- Muslims, should not hold a grudge against each other. Instead, both should tolerate and compromise with each other in certain situations in order to build up a good relationship. Since the Muslims were commanded by Allah to do good towards non- Muslims, that does not mean that the non- Muslims should ignore this command. The lesson from the above verse is that, non- Muslims too should have effort to establish a good bond with the Muslims, regardless of their differences of faith.

TAFSIR ATH-THABARI:

This verse talks about the advice given to the Prophet Syu’aib to his people. According to the Tafsir at-Thabari, Prophet Syu’aib was advising his people saying that do not let the hostility between them and the prophet due to the teaching that he brought making the people refuse to accept the truth and remain with the wrong practice of their late generations that will lead to the punishment from Allah. He wanted his people to take lessons from the past people and not commit the same mistakes. The term وَلَا يَجْرِمَنَّكُم is being defined with several meaning as some scholar refers it to the meaning of “do not let the clash” while some said it is “do not let the argument or anger”. Overall, this part of the verse saying about how people should let themselves be influence with their emotional feeling in dealing with the others. Every people must think of the consequences of every action that they did so that there is no regret in the end.

TAFSIR FI ZILAL AL-QURAN

This verse portrays the effort of Prophet Syuaib in reminding his people the truth. He reminded them about the doom befell on the people of Prophet Nuh, Hud, Soleh and Lut. This may open their hardened hearts in a way which rational, cool and well-argued reminders may not influence their hearts.
The term La yajrimannakum means ‘let not your disagreement’ which portrays Prophet Syuib words to his people. He tells them that they must not let their opposition to him harden their attitude of blind rejection. He says to them plainly that he fears that they may bring upon themselves a doom which is not unlike that which befell earlier communities. He reminds them especially of the people of Lot who lived close by and who had recently been destroyed.

TAFSIR OF QURANIC VERSES AND ANALYSIS: 3: لَّا يَتَّخِذِ

Do not appoint / do not take.

TAFSIR IBN KATHIR:

This verse discuss on how Muslims should treat the non-Muslims, where Allah warned the Muslims in this verse to avoid from appointing the non- believers as ‘wali Allah’ or as their leaders. This is a cautious act in order to avoid any misconduct by the non- Muslims that may occur as a result from trusting them as protectors or as leaders. Allah proceeded the verse by mentioning that whoever ignores this message and does the opposite from what Allah requested, they will not be secured by the help of Allah. This is a reminder from Allah for the Muslims, so that the Muslims do not seek protection from the leader, nor causing enmity towards the wali of Allah.
Although Allah gave a clear prohibition from appointing the non- believers as leaders, there are a few exceptions to it. Referring to Surah An- Nahl verse 126, which means; “With the exception of those who are not forced to say they do not believe, although their hearts remain firm in faith”. This verse implies that the above command is an exception towards anyone who is in a state of jeopardy if he does not accept the non- Muslims as leaders. It is also an exception for anyone who are trying to avoid from being harmed by the non- Muslims, therefore, it is forgivable that they seek protection from the non- Muslims. For example, if a Muslim lives in a country ruled by a non- Muslims, it is acceptable for him to seek help from that non- Muslim leader in order to be safe. These are the Muslims who have no choice but to bow down towards the commands of the non- Muslims, but in reality, their hearts are against it.
This whole verse explains clearly on how we should act towards the non- Muslims. We should be considerate by tolerating with them. However, our level of consideration should not reach to the extent of making them as leaders. For example, the wars that occurred during the time of prophet Muhammad PBUH, the Muslims were repeatedly reminded not to appoint the non- Muslims as leaders even though it seems like they could gather more strength if they seek help from the non- Muslims. This is none other but to shape the Muslims to have a strong faith in Allah, and to trust Allah more than they trust the non- Muslims although it seems like the non- Muslims can guarantee safety for them. Another reason why Muslims should not easily trust and seek help from the non- Muslims is because they might have a hidden agenda that we are not aware of. So, to be cautious, it is advisable for the Muslims to always be careful of whom they trust. It is important for us to always bear in mind that every strength that mankind has was given by Allah. Thus, if it appears to us that the non- Muslims have stronger army than us, avoid seeking help from them. Rather, trust Allah that He will give a better strength to us since he is the origin of all strength.

TAFSIR ATH-THABARI:

According to the Tafsir at-Thabari, this verse is talking about the prohibition of the Muslim in joining the partner with Kuffar and helping them in fighting against the other Muslim and reveals the Muslim’s weakness. Whoever did it, they have to know that they will no longer receive any help from Allah as they had betrayed the religion and throwing themselves to the wrong path. Allah forbids Muslims to neglect their own brother while being good to the non-Muslims only. This is not the brotherhood that the religion is emphasized on. So, as Muslims, we have to be tolerating to each other and prioritize on the things that will make the religion stronger rather than creating argument between people.

TAFSIR FI ZILAL AL-QURAN:

Syed Qutb has display the very stern warning in verse 28, because the verse is very clear that a Muslim disowns Islam if he forges or form a relationship of alliance or patronage with someone who is actually cut himself cut himself off from God. Muslims should not forge alliance with the unbelievers because Allah alone is the alliance of the believers.
This term (لا يتخذ) brings meaning ‘do not forge’ which means it is a prohibition to Muslims forming alliance with the enemies of Allah. The unwelcomed confrontation is prohibited and whoever do this has already cut off the relationship with God, meaning that he has no more tie or support or faith with God.
The permissible of concession can only be done in the condition or state of fear. Such people may try to protect themselves by pretending to support the unbelievers, but this must be understood to be only a verbal support given for a specific purpose. It cannot be an expression of any firmly established alliance or deeply rooted love.
Syed Qutb has taken the sayings of Ibn Abbas, “The concession here must not be understood as to seek protection through acting in support of unbelievers; it must be limited only to verbal statements.

It can be understood that there is no concession whatsoever for a relationship of love between a believer and an unbeliever. It is implied here and explicitly stated elsewhere in this verse that an unbeliever is a person who does not accept that God’s revelation be implemented in all aspects of life. The concession never permits a believer to aid the unbeliever, in any way or form pretending to protect himself.  God will never ever be deceived by anyone by any way.

TAFSIR IBN KATHIR:

In this verse, Allah warned the Muslims not to appoint the hypocrites among the non- believers as advisors. This is because, the hypocrites or the Munaafiqun are always planning on taking down the Muslims. They would usually use any way they can to confuse, oppose and harm the believers. They would expose the secrets of the Muslims to the enemies so that the Muslims are easily defeated. The hypocrites would make it seems like they are on the Muslims’ side, while the reality, their hearts are full of hatred towards the Muslims.
From this verse, it discusses on the relationship between Muslims and non- Muslims by stating the prohibition of the Muslims from easily trusting the non- believers without any cautious step. The non- believers or the Munaafiqun are constantly causing problems to the Muslims. The Muslims should be extra careful on whom they trust, because the hypocrites might be anyone among them. The hypocrites will deceive the Muslims by offering help to the Muslims and try to develop good relationship, but at the same time, they are against the Muslims and are willing to expose the secrets and weaknesses of the Muslims to the enemy with the intention to drag the Muslims down. This is the reason why Allah reminded His servants of this deceiving act of the non- believers.

TAFSIR ATH-THABARI:

According to at-Thabari, this verse saying about the prohibition of Muslim in making non-Muslim as their close partner and this due to the characters of non-believers as they have the feeling of hatred and enmity lies within their heart towards the people with different faith then them. It is said that the non-believers always hoping that bad things will happen to others. These attitudes are obviously wrong and to avoid the Muslims from falling into the trap of non-believers, it is need for them to make sure that there are distance between Muslims and non-believers.

TAFSIR FI ZILAL AL-QURAN:

According to Syed Qutb, this verse is full of details on people’s innermost thought. It records inner feelings and apparent reactions. It captures every little movement and it is a picture of a certain type of person who can be seen in every age, in every society, professing friendship with the Muslims when the Muslims are strong and victorious. The unbelievers’ claims, however, are belied by their every thought, every feeling and every organ.
Muslim should take precaution when dealing with the unbelievers because Muslims may be deceived by them, placing their trust in them when they wish nothing but trouble and confusion for the Muslims and spare no effort to inflict hardships on them. They most determinedly seek to undermine the Muslims, whenever they have a chance to do so, at any moment of day or night.
The term La yattakhiz brings meaning do not take. According to Syed Qutb, God tells the Muslims not to make any such people their advisors and confidants. However, the Muslims do not heed this directive. They continue to refer to such people in every matter and situation and look up to them for guidance in every system, method and philosophy.
The Quranic verse has been a reminder to the believers in Medina that people around them who rejects their faith and have strong hatred towards Muslims can’t be trusted. Thus, Muslims should concern on the warning from God, and this warning is not only meant to the Muslim community in particular period but it applies all the time.
Syed Qutb also expressed his frustration when Muslims not realized and not take this warning seriously. This is because time has revealed the wickedness of those who reject Islam, who are being good at the appearance but have intention to destroy Islam and somehow Muslims still being friendly to them. We can have tolerance with them but never open our hearts to them and treat them as close friends throughout life.

History of Starbucks

The currently largest worldwide coffeehouse, Starbucks started as a small business back in time 1971. The three important people who initiated the coffeehouse were two teachers and a writer. An English teacher Jerry Baldwin, history teacher Zev Siegel and writer Gordon Bowker were friends with Peet’s Coffee founder, Alfred Peet. They were inspired by Peet’s Coffee and Tea in Barkeley so the trio pooled together $8000 of their money plus loans to start up their coffee been venture[1].The name, Starbucks was taken from a shipmate in Herman Melville’s novel, Moby Dick. Meanwhile, the logo was initially a wood cut style image of two-tailed mermaid or siren[2] which has undergone many changes throughout the time from bare chests to more stylize and the hair covered her body. They did not come with the brewed coffee and espresso but focused on roasting coffee beans and coffee making equipment.
Howard Schultz became the part of the team as head of marketing in 1982. He was attracted to Starbucks when he tasted Sumatra in 1981, his first walk into the store. When Schultz returned from Italy, his idea of serving espresso was against the founders so he went out and run his own business in 1985, II Giornale. Later when he earned enough money, he returned to Seattle to buy Starbucks from Baldwin and Bowker for $3.7 million. Howard Schultz’s goal was to expand Starbucks into numerous locations, spreading out from Seattle[3] so he consolidated II Gionarle with Starbucks and the brand went public in 1992. It opened stores in Japan and Singapores in 1996 so it became international. Starbucks is successfully expanding until now to more 17,000 stores in 55 countries around the worlds.

The Development of Religion according to Al-Quran’s Perspectives

The word religion or al-din itself portrays the belief of human being of having God to give their submissiveness and obedience throughout their life. Allah has mentioned several times in Al-Quran; (3:19) and (5: 3) that the religion (Islam) has already completed and Islam is the only religion that is accepted by Him. However, the term al-din also is being used by Allah S.W.T when referring to the religions other than Islam, (3:85). This shows that the belief though it contradicting with Islamic creed also being called as religion (al-din). So, do religion actually developed from the ancient time till presence?
In Muslim scripture the Holy Quran, (30:30) God has mentioned about al-fitrah which brings the meaning of natural inclination of human being to have tawhid and believe in God. Undoubtedly, man and religion cannot be separated as human have the nature feeling of needing God in their life. Besides, the term al-fitrah also shows that human was already believed in Allah and gave oath to One God (7:172). Therefore, we understand that the covenant has taken place before human being came to existence and the affirmation of Allah as the only God happened to every person not excluding even one. However, the parents and also the environment of the family will shape the creed of the baby as being told by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in his authentic hadith, narrated by Al-Bukhari; “No baby is born but upon Fitrah (as a Muslim). It is his parents who make him a Jew or a Christian or a Polytheist”. Throughout recorded history of religions development, we can understand that only Islam is the religion that would never ever develop. The fundamental aspects by the revelation are still the same from history of Adam till Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), yet the creed of believing the oneness of Allah is al-fitrah. For example, Prophet Ibrahim with his pure nature was searching the truth and he realized that his people were worshipping the false gods which created by they themselves. He was asking himself who is the God using the thinking, observation and his natural inclination. Thus, with the guidance from Allah he gained the answer when he found contradicting elements if the sun or moon and the idols are the gods.
Is God sent different syir’ah to different prophets, and can it be developed? Allah says in Al-Quran (5:48) that He has made the rules for the people of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the people before us. Although human beings are given ‘aqal to think and decide, we still have limitation in knowing what is good and what is bad comprehensively. Therefore, Allah chose the prophets among human themselves so it is easier to convey the messages of the revelations. Different messengers have different syir’ah as the ummah sometimes can share the same rules and laws, and there were also rules that are given only to certain ummah. For example, the rules of Saturday for the Jews were not meant for the followers of Prophet Muhammad, and the pilgrimage was also being done during the time of Prophet Ibrahim AS. Human being are ought to follow the minhaj of the prophets. The source of guidance is not only the revelation but also from the way or path of the prophets, meaning that Allah does not abandon us to do whatever according to our desire but He was sending the prophets to let people be in the guided way. The situation is highlighted when ummah need the explanations of Quranic verses revealed such as the commandments of prayer. Difference in outlook, Al-Quran and Al-Sunnah has solutions and remedies most effectively. Whereas one is the word of God, for instance the commandments of pilgrimage and the prayer while the other is the words and actions of the prophets such as the way of performing the act of worshipping, performing solah and haj.
The revelation of Al-Quran is the continuous process for twenty-three years to give ummah the strong belief in aqidah and slowly came with Shari’ah Islamiyyah. The consequence of all these was that jahiliyyah customs and traditions were gradually fades and replaced by Islamic way of life. Yet some customs remain good, and should not be abandoned. Hence, throughout the process of revelation there were many events happened and thus made ummah easily grasped the rules and regulations provided to solve the issues. However, this also does not brings into statement that the religion were developing, but the unity of ummah itself were and still developing. Thus, without the prophets they cannot understand well how to manage their life as a Muslim.
How about Judaism and Christianity? They believe in God, even the Jewish are strict to their creed of monotheism but the problem is the distortion they had made to the scripture and religion by the hands of people who rejected Allah’s commandments. This is when the development of religion happened because of the change they did to the original text of revelation. For example, the scripture given to Bani Israel which was revealed to Prophet Musa AS was no longer being accepted after it was distorted. Do we still consider the book as ‘Words of God’ when it has been altered and changed? Besides, they also rejected the message of Prophet Isa and Prophet Muhammad and this also causing them to go astray from the din al-fitrah. However, they continue to make it as a part of their religion and transmitted to the next generations causing their religion to develop and being the cultural religion.
Meanwhile, in Christianity they love Jesus Christ so much but making him as one of the Gods in trinity concept is no longer the real doctrine of the original teaching of Jesus. Furthermore, they were making a lot of changes in their religion and also touched Adam’s history of eating the prohibited fruit thus considering all human have sin although they are just being born. Accurately, whether Prophet Adam eats or not eat the fruit, Allah has already planned to make him as a caliph in this world as in Al-Quran (2:30) and he (Prophet Adam) already repented for eating the prohibited fruit. There is no such thing from Quranic perspective that a baby is inheriting the sin of anyone.
In Surah As-Saf verse 6, Prophet Isa AS had told his people about his coming was to confirm the book revealed to Prophet Musa, Torah. Besides, he also mentioned about the final messenger namely Ahmad but later because of the arrogance of the people they did not accept their own prophet’s teaching and this made the religion to be corrupted. It follows that the Jewish and Christians still consider their religion as true even though they made changes to their doctrines while actually their belief has been developed and become new views and concepts leaving their prophet’s religion. It is important to see the word of Prophet Isa AS about his coming that was meant to confirm the book before him. The religion brought by Jesus was never being different with the religion brought by all of the prophets before him such as Prophet Ibrahim, Prophet Isa and Prophet Muhammad PBUH although the term ‘Islam’ was started being used in the time of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and the Abraham religion is hanif.
In a nutshell,in Islam our religion is never meant to be developed and all the religions that are developing are cultural religion. Thus, the laws of human conducts may be varied between ummah but the fundamental aspects and the creed of religion are fixed from history of Adam until forever. Last but not least, acceptance of all prophets is the condition to be in right path. If one rejects one of them it destroys the whole of article of faith. In short, the altered concept of faith will never ever be the same with the original because the original definitely won’t change.
To be mention importantly here, the views from Islamic doctrine definitely have differences from the views of other religion's scholars. However, we hold to the concept of similarities where every religion preached to do goodness and there is no force in religion. As stated in Quran,' For you your religion, and for me my religion'

balik semula kat tajuk . 17.8.2015.
Aku nak jadi anak mama ayah yg berjasa dunia akhirat.
aku nak hafaz albaqarah.
aku nak capai cita2 aku sbgi #########.

Aku mohon Allah cerahkan andai masih belum terurai segala salah faham.
Lets not appear in each other's life.
